Minnesota Golden Gopher Athletic Director Mark Coyle told us he would go out and search the nation to find the best coach for the team to lead it back to the glory days. Instead, he chose Brad May, the assistant coach of this team that has disappointed and under achieved the last three seasons. He is Brad Frost light, with the same game plan and outlook for the program.
Coyle, told us he was looking for a name coach, one who could bring instant recognition to the team, a proven winner, instead we get this. Let’s see, we’re on the recruiting journey and Mark Johnson, Jeff Kampersal, Nadine Muzerall and Brad May are recruiting you heavily, who you picking, Johnson and Muzerall, who’ve led their teams to the finals the last four years or May, who’s Gophers teams have done well in the regular season, albeit with 33 losses, almost double that of the top teams or the pillars of women’s hockey coaching. I don’t think the answer is going to be May.
In the end Coyle let the fans and this program down. Once the envy of other Universities and Colleges when it came to hockey, we are now just another team hoping to make it to the playoffs. If this team fails this should be the end of Coyle’s tenure as the Gophers athletic director, he was also responsible for the hiring of Bob Matzko, the men’s coach at Minnesota and he too was an absolute disaster. The pride of Minnesota Gopher Sports programs has always been the hockey teams.
